Motion sprites for Agarest Zero are pretty bad. In the other two, the sprites have motions, like breathing and swaying of hair (and a lot of boob jiggling, looking at you, Eva). In the first game, you can expect just still sprites, with same poses that just change facial expressions. I tried out this game because of the visual novel aspect, being an avid reader and a great fan of VN's.

The game is half SRPG and half visual novel. There are events throughout the game which, apart from helping you raise your affection level with the heroine, help you get a closer look at the character you are dealing with. Each character has their own personality and reasons for staying with the party. Most of the characters from the first generation will stay with you for all the other generations, and each generation brings a few more people, excluding the heroines. The very highlight of this game are its characters. or even just taking it in stride and living his life to the fullest until his time comes.

A hero can be very determined to fulfill his destiny, or reluctant to the point of rebellion. In that aspect, the fourth generation's hero of the first game had the most realistic and relatable point of view. It's very intriguing seeing how different people feel about having their destinies set in stone with full knowledge that they will die young, for a purpose cast on them by the first generation's hero. The story plays around the topic of destiny, and each new generation has a new set of people tied to a single destiny. Depending on how much a potential wife likes you (there are always 3 for each generations, excluding the final generations for each game), your son will have stronger stats, and depending on which female you've chosen, the son will have a change of appearance and even sometimes a change of primary weapon (for example, if your hero is using a sword and marries a mage, the child will be a mage - although you can check what kind of child it will be at the Alchemist's). Since each game spans for at least 2 generations, the hero of your current generation must choose a spouse by the end of his own arc. What makes the series stand out from most of the games is the ''waifu system''.

The series has 3 games: Agarest, Agarest Zero and Agarest 2 (I don't really count Marriage game). If not for you, then for the others who look at this post. Just finished Agarest 2, after completing the first game as well.
